Nearly four years ago, Google introduced Material You to billions of Android devices, making them feel more personal and approachable. Now, Material 3 Expressive builds on that foundation with deeper customization so you can truly express yourself.
This update brings fluid, springy animations that add delight to everyday tasks. For example, dismissing a notification causes nearby ones to subtly shift, while a satisfying haptic response follows when you snap it away. Similar touches show up when swiping away recent apps, adjusting the volume slider, or pulling down the quick shade. Subtle background blurs also add depth, keeping the interface light and visually engaging.
With dynamic color themes, responsive components, and expressive typography, your device adapts more naturally to your personal style. These visual choices will also extend across Google apps like Photos, Gmail, and Fitbit, giving your ecosystem a cohesive look.
Smarter Tools and Helpful Updates
Material 3 Expressive is designed to balance aesthetics with functionality. You can now customize Quick Settings to fit more of your favorite shortcuts—like Flashlight or Do Not Disturb—while smarter notification management ensures important alerts never get lost.
A highlight of this update is Live Updates, which provides glanceable, real-time tracking for progress notifications. Whether you’re following an Uber Eats delivery or a rideshare pickup, updates stay visible and easy to check without digging through notifications.
A Fluid Experience on Your Watch
On Wear OS, Material 3 Expressive is tailored for the round display. Scrolling animations trace the natural curve of the screen, while shape-morphing transitions and depth effects make information more accessible. Everyday tasks like entering a pin or controlling media feel smoother and more responsive.
Dynamic color-theming now extends to watches, so the theme you pick for your watch face applies across the entire system. Buttons adapt to the circular display for easy tapping, and redesigned Tiles provide quick access to what matters most—whether that’s texting contacts or starting a workout.
With Wear OS 6, these updates also deliver up to 10% better battery life, alongside continued performance optimizations. You’ll be able to try these improvements first on Pixel devices later this year, with more coming to Android 16 and Wear OS 6 partners soon.
