Wyze has launched a new budget-friendly doorbell camera called the Wyze Battery Video Doorbell. This device resembles the Video Doorbell v2 released earlier in 2023 but includes a rechargeable battery for easier installation without wiring, although it can also be hardwired for full functionality.
The new doorbell is priced at $65.98 and is available on Wyze’s online store. In comparison, the wired-only Video Doorbell v2 launched at $39.99 and is now bundled with a wireless chime for $59.98.
The Battery Video Doorbell offers a resolution of 1536 x 1536, which is lower than the 2048 x 1536 of the v2 model.
However, it features a wider 150-degree viewing angle, providing a “head-to-toe 1:1 view" to better capture everything on the front porch, including packages.
The battery can last up to six months, depending on porch activity, but past models indicate a more typical lifespan of about four to six weeks between charges.
Footage from this doorbell can be saved on a microSD card (up to 256GB) or stored in the cloud with a subscription, which ranges from $2.99 to $19.99 per month. The subscription also unlocks advanced features like AI-powered detection for people and packages. Continuous recording is possible only when the doorbell is hardwired.
The doorbell has an IP65 weather resistance rating, making it suitable for outdoor installation. It offers two-way talk and programmed responses via the Wyze app.
Additionally, it can alert visitors with a recorded message that they are being recorded. Wyze's new doorbell aims to include features comparable to those of more expensive brands like Google and Amazon.
However, security remains a concern due to past incidents, including a breach where users accessed other customers’ feeds and undisclosed vulnerabilities in older products.
